PERIFERIDA

The protagonists live and inhabit the outskirts of São Paulo. PERIFERIDA here is, in addition to the name of the show, also a character. At once a narrator and the place where Pedro and Samantha are born and raised. Pedro is the typical effeminate child who suffers prejudice from the other children. Even though he tries to join in the common local games, like flying kites, he is attacked by the other kids. Growing up as a gay boy in the periphery is, at times, not understanding one’s own condition. The Drag world is the great discovery of his adolescence. Samantha is the daughter of evangelical and conservative parents. Her birth, like Claudinei’s, fills the family with hopes and dreams for the boy. In adolescence, she affirms herself as a Trans woman and enters into conflict with her family.

The play aims to address themes of sexual orientation and gender identity and, above all, clarify the differences between them. When we tell the story of a Drag and a travesti, we are already stating that the two are not the same. PERIFERIDA has an original script written by the Potiguara playwright Ramilla Souza, developed in collaboration with the Coletivo Acuenda (2017). One of the research foundations is the life stories of the collective’s members, in addition to the travesti Agatha D'Oliveira, who participated in the creation and the first season of the play. The direction is by Juão Nyn, actor and musician, also Potiguara. The play premiered in São Paulo in February 2017. The Coletivo Acuenda has been working with LGBTQIA+ themes in the Jardim Romano neighborhood, in the far east of São Paulo, for six years.
